Memo Pad: August Wrap Up

Another month over and it’s officially winter. I’m just kidding. Kind of. It definitely feels like summer has ended as this week has been raining all the time, I’ve had to wrap up in a hoody and turn my heater on. I want summer back please!

But book wise I’ve had a good month. What with the move at the start of the month (which went well) I got a lot of reading done as all my other things were packed away. I got 4 books read in the first ten days of the month and then I settled in and started writing which meant my reading pace DIED. Just for comparison in the next twenty days I read 2 books.

But I enjoyed those two books and I’m really enjoying writing my #excitingspaceWIP so win win.

As for my book buying ban. After my little slip up last month I can officially say I bought 0 books this month. I did request one off netgalley but I read it straight away (and it was something that I’ve been wanting to read for a few years). So here’s the scores:

Books owned & unread at start of month: 65

Books bought: 0

Books acquired: 1

Books read: 6

Books owned & unread at end of month: 60

I Am Currently…

There has been a lot going on in my life lately and with the scheduled posts I’ve had to do I’m feeling all out of sorts with what I have and haven’t told you and when.

I thought it would be a great time to do a new post idea. It’s by no means an original idea, I’ve seen loads of bloggers do their own takes on this but I’m going to go through what I’m currently up to and I’d love to hear about you in the comments too.

i am currently

I am currently lying in my new bed and in my new/old room.

I moved. Everything went really well. Thanks to everyone for the good luck wishes. It’s been a tiring couple of weeks but I can officially say my new/old room is sorted. I say new/old room as we moved back to our old house in east London that we’d had family staying in while we lived in Guernsey. So I’ve been here before but all my new furniture has now mixed with my old furniture and the good news is they’re getting on really well. No fights have broken out about floor space. I don’t like being stuck upstairs again as I’m not well enough to use them but I will deal.

I’m currently reading The Sin Eaters Daughter by Melinda Salisbury

Sideways Cross Stitching Progress

It’s time to share with you all what progress I’ve made with my cross stitching. I can’t believe it’s been three weeks. I moved halfway through and the last week or two has just gone by so quickly. I barely got anything done, most of what I have to share is from before.

It’s not forward progress so much as sideways progress as I tested out some options for the gold stitching. I also tested out a few designs for a small piece but I’ll show you what I mean.

First up after all of your wonderful advice last time around, I tested a load of normal dmc threads, as well as DMC diamant in gold which is a single thread equivalent to two threads of dmc/one held double, and kreinik braid #4 in Japan gold.

Here they are:

It’s difficult to show the metallics in a photo well.

Out of the sample swatches I do like the look of the krenick the most because its just a lighter gold than the dmc diamant. But the kreinik is over twice as expensive and I’d need quite a few rolls of it. They both definitely look much nicer than the regular dmc though. The main problem I had with the metallic threads is that to use them you have to knot them at the needle and because I’m using 18 count fabric the knot catches every time I pull it through. I can do it but my poor arms don’t like having to do it and get achy quickly.

I’ve decided to use one of them anyway because they do look so much nicer than the regular thread, so if anyone has any idea about stopping the knot from catching so much that would be helpful. I just have to decide which. Continue reading

3 Bookish Things Tag

I wasn’t tagged but I saw this over on Cait’s paperfury blog where she took some of the questions from instagram and made others up. I thought it was a really fun tag. (also I have just moved and so hello queued post). Without further ado, 3 bookish things:

3 favourite authors

I really don’t follow authors much so this isn’t a great answer but:

  • Megan Whalen Turner for writing the Queen’s Thief series. There’s only one book left but I’m sure I’ll be keeping an eye out for anything else she writes afterwards
  • VE Schwab has quite a few books that I want to read but haven’t yet. I absolutely loved A Darker Shade of Magic and I WILL read the sequels at some point and I also really want to read Vicious (and the sequel comes out this year too)
  • Shaun David Hutchinson has a lot of books I want to read. I haven’t actually read any of his books so I’m not sure I should really be putting him on a list of favourite authors but there isn’t really anyone else who has so many books that I want to read let alone have read.

3 weirdest things used as a bookmark

My brain? Okay wait, hear me out. I don’t mean literally using my brain as a page holder. But I use to just…. Remember the page number rather than ever actually use bookmarks.

I have however used tube tickets before (back in the old days before oyster cards) simply because I had so many of them lying around that there was always one within reach.

And thirdly, a surface. If I don’t remember the page I’ll just leave a book open and face down on a surface. Maybe a table, maybe my bed… I really never use bookmarks much.

Mini Blanket Finish

Project number two that I wanted to get finished before the move was a mini blanket that I had started years ago and had been sitting on my shelf for three years.

Here’s where it was:

My original plan for the aran yarn was to knit a scarf but this was around the time I stopped being able to knit so I realised I needed to do something else with it. I decided on a blanket instead. I only had the one ball of the light grey yarn as it was only supposed to be the contrast colour in the scarf which meant the blanket could only be so big if I wanted to keep the colours relatively even. Memo Pad: July Wrap up

This post is a little late but I’m officially moving this week! It’s all a bit up in the air even though I’m literally leaving everything up to other people to sort out! All I need to do is pack some clothes and my favourite pillow and get on a plane but knowing that all my creature comforts will be in a van for a week (I.e not with me!) is not great. (also my laptop, so if you don’t hear from me anytime soon then well, something may have gone wrong!)

But anyway, back to July. My month started out with me still being completely obsessed with the new story idea that I started outlining in June, and when I’m completely obsessed with writing my reading time suffers. A lot. So the start of the month was a bit rocky. In fact, to try to help me get into the reading mood and feel like I had at least read something I read a short story. Then I read a novella…. But then I finished my story outline! 48,500 words of obsession over and suddenly I had a lot of free time again.

I ended up reading three books in a week and the I still had ten days left of July. At which point I realised I was going to have to write loads of reviews (because I never manage to do them as I go and always end up doing them all at the end of the month) so I looked through some of the longest books on my kindle to help prevent the number from getting out of hand and (with the help of twitter) I picked a book.

I also wanted to update you all on my book buying ban. It has officially been 7 weeks since it started and I caved this week and bought 2 books in the kindle summer sale because I really wanted them and they were less than £1 each. BUT, I still think it is going well. In the first 6 months of the year I bought 30 books which amounts to over a book a week (plus arcs!) so 2 books in 7 weeks is still an improvement and the number of books on my kindle is still going down. Which is good because trying to pick between the 60+ books on my kindle is very overwhelming (hence needing the help of twitter even after I’d narrowed it down).

Books on kindle at the start of the month: 69

Books bought: 2

Books left: 65

I’m looking forward to seeing this number drop as the months go on. I want to get down to at most 50 books on my kindle by christmas. I could say less than that but I’m planning on writing the first draft of my new story outline between now and then and, as I mentioned, I’m terrible at reading while I’m writing.
