New Year, Same Me

I hope everyone has been having a happy holiday and I’m wishing you all a very happy new year. I got a load of yarn and books for Christmas, no surprises there, right? I love them anyway and I had a very exhausting but happy Christmas. I’m not going to show you the yarn, you’ll have to wait and see what I make with it (Hint: Blankets, it’ll all be blankets!)

I kind of hate resolutions. Especially the ones that say to do something different. New year new you. Those never work for me but I do like seeing goals. Things I want to achieve which are normally a continuation of what I’m already doing. I guess my biggest struggle is to keep doing things not start (anyone who knows me know I start too many things!!). And goals help to keep me motivated and not give in.

But before we get onto 2019 I’m going back for a quick look at last year. I’m not actually going to go through the goals I wrote last year (they’re here) as I didn’t stick to most of my small goals instead I’ll focus on what happened. I did set one big one though and that was to focus on writing which I’m going to put a big tick next too even if the goal morphed throughout the year.

2018 Happenings:

  • Finished writing my first ever proper book and edited it
  • Got feedback on my writing for the first time and learnt so much
  • Shelved that book which is an achievement for me to step away from something that was not making me happy
  • Wrote and edited a whole new book that I love so much (I’m getting feedback on it at the moment)
  • Moved back home (goodbye beautiful guernsey) and made our house ready to be put on the market (26 years worth of clutter and Wear and tear) but now we are just waiting for it to go live.
  • Got my autism diagnosis. The understanding it brings has already made such a difference to me
  • Read 67 books (I’ll go into this in my next post)

So that’s my 2018 over. To be honest I’m really proud of myself. I’ve learnt so much and endured where it came to my writing without giving up. The feedback and doubts are hard. And I’ve also learnt where I should step back for my own sake. A lot of it hasn’t been easy but I wouldn’t trade other parts for anything!

Goals and Happenings for 2019

Again my main goal is going to be too focus on my writing. To keep going. To keep growing and not let myself give up. I love it so much but parts of it can be so very hard. I want to edit #ExcitingSpaceWIP based on the feedback I get. I want to get more feedback, edit it again and see where I end up. I want to also at least write a draft zero for my next story idea at some point during 2019 too. I’m not going to say I’ll write the first draft though as, while that may happen, it’s too far away to predict.

I’ll also be setting reading goals as always and also, as always, I won’t be setting it so high that is difficult for me. I like enjoying reading! My reading goal will be 52 books again and I want to keep the books I own on my kindle under 50. (Cross your fingers for me!)

The biggest event this year will be moving again. Only this time the plan is to move to Lanzarote. Finally. After so many years of planning. Which is all very scary right now with brexit happening so soon and so badly.

Linked to this is making ANOTHER attempt at learning Spanish (I think I’m on attempt 7 now? Edit: I just worked it out and this is attempt 8) I’ve downloaded a new app and am going to try to keep at it (again).

This year is going to be scary I think with the move and with brexit happening but it’s also very exciting. I have no idea what my look back at this year will look like!

So what about you? What are the biggest events of 2018 for you and what are you most proud of? I’d love to hear about them! I find that sometimes it’s the small things that we can be happiest about. My diagnosis is definitely up there for me. And what about next year? What plans and goals are on store for you?

Goings On

I have a quick teaser update for the yarn I showed you last week. The blanket is going well and it is ridiculously soft and cuddly. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever made anything this snugly. It’s going to be one big square (think granny square but using a different stitch). It looks like two here but I’ve just folded it over so you can see the reverse is identical. I love reversible stitches!

I’ve finished a full ball of the cappuccino and have just done my first row of the second colour. The red which looks very bright! I’m loving it. Although each row around the square is getting longer to do so progress will be slowing down.

In other news, a lot has been happening here over the last week. My brother and his girlfriend left yesterday for their two year round the world trip! See you in two years, bro! And my nan, (and my cat) moved out into her own assisted living apartment that’s been all done up and snazzy. Which means, a) the house is now much quieter with half the occupants. And, b) the whole family (without the cat) went out for a goodbye meal.

There was thirteen of us… I think? I can’t count that high, okay? We went out to a lovely Chinese restaurant and had yummy food. I’m resting up now. It was the first time I left the house since the move one month ago. In fact. It’s the first time I made it down the stairs in that time. So lots of resting up in order.

In the meantime I’ve been writing more of my Exciting Space WIP. I’m over a third way through which is ….. exciting! I’ll be finished writing it in November, which simultaneously feels like its going quickly and is an absolute age away!

I Am Currently…

There has been a lot going on in my life lately and with the scheduled posts I’ve had to do I’m feeling all out of sorts with what I have and haven’t told you and when.

I thought it would be a great time to do a new post idea. It’s by no means an original idea, I’ve seen loads of bloggers do their own takes on this but I’m going to go through what I’m currently up to and I’d love to hear about you in the comments too.

i am currently

I am currently lying in my new bed and in my new/old room.

I moved. Everything went really well. Thanks to everyone for the good luck wishes. It’s been a tiring couple of weeks but I can officially say my new/old room is sorted. I say new/old room as we moved back to our old house in east London that we’d had family staying in while we lived in Guernsey. So I’ve been here before but all my new furniture has now mixed with my old furniture and the good news is they’re getting on really well. No fights have broken out about floor space. I don’t like being stuck upstairs again as I’m not well enough to use them but I will deal.

Taking Breaks from Creativity

If you’ve been reading my blog lately you’ll know, because I’ve mentioned it a lot, that I’m currently editing a novel that I’ve written (and wow, editing is so much more work than writing). I’ve been editing it for a couple months now and its a full time thing. Getting my brain to focus and stay focused on one thing is a task in its self. I can do it but after a while my brain starts getting sluggish, and instead of being excited I get indifferent. It becomes a chore rather than a something exciting.

The point in this post is, after I finished my last round of edits I took a week off. A well deserved break where I didn’t even look at the thing. Nope, not allowed. I had life things I needed to catch up on after putting everything on hold to edit but otherwise it was a week off. No work allowed! Continue reading

Life Update

In which I tell you I am so completely snowed under. I should point out I mean metaphorically just in case anyone thinks we’ve had yet another springtime snow storm.

I have books to read for review. I have books to read to beta. I have MY book to read because I am editing and it’s ridiculously difficult and time consuming. (I actually had a dream about verb endings the other day, it was partially someone lecturing me and partially the actual verb endings animated with arms and legs and nodding along).

But to focus on what’s been taking up most of my time over the last couple of weeks:

Baby Leopards, Pretty Stationery and Finished 1st Drafts

I finished writing the first draft of my fantasy story! Happy Dance time! I celebrated with the age old – lets eat lots of yummy food – method. Chinese takeaway, ice cream and, okay, I had other desserts too!

success

This post is literally just me patting myself on the back and explaining this is why I’ve been less crafty on the blog lately. I was a little busy!

I started writing at the start of November for NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), where I managed to write 11 chapters/45k of my book. I had planned to only do about one chapter a month after that, which would have me finishing around about July but…. Well, I got carried away and I ended up finishing the whole thing on February 3rd.

Why does the exact date matter? Continue reading

2018 Goals

I’m a little late with this new years goals post but it took me a little while to think about exactly what I wanted to write. I also spent the start of the year really sick but I’m over that now and ready to get down to business.

Last year the goals I set were varied but rather specific. The year before that I made resolutions instead. The way I do this changes every year depending on how I feel and what I’m ready for. I don’t like settings goals or resolutions that are pointless and will be broken so they change.

This year I’m picking one big thing to concentrate on. And other things that I hope will get done but are not so important.

2018

My one big resolution for 2018 is to finish writing my book and then revise and edit it. I’m five chapters away from finishing my first draft. I think this will probably be done by the end of March which gives me a good chunk of the year to get it edited and polished up. There are obviously next steps to that but what happens after that isn’t in my control right now and will be decided when I get there. Editing and revising isn’t going to be an easy task and will be a lot of hard work so that is what I’m concentrating on. Hopefully this involves some betas and getting lots of feedback to help me improve it as well. Continue reading
