May was such a busy month for me which is why this post is a couple of days late. But before that I just want to say hello June! It’s my birthday month which is exciting. It’s also pride month so happy pride everyone. It’s also also officially summer in my books (sorry southern hemisphere people).
But back to May. Okay. So first off I had excellent news. My short story is going to be published. I got the acceptance email a couple of weeks ago and I’m super happy! I don’t have any details. It’ll take a while (hello publishing industry) but at some point my work will be published.
In other writerly news, I finished up my latest edit for my YA Scifi and I’ve foisted it off on beta readers which means I’m done with it for two months and I get a much needed rest! Which is the main reason this post is late. I couldn’t bring myself to do ANYTHING for a few days. Working for 3 months straight on that revision killed my motivation to do things!
I did however read a bunch of amazing books in May (8 books) although I had a reading slump at the end there – also caused by me going nonstop on my editing but also because there was some minor travelling which meant I was too exhausted for a week to do ANYTHING, even if that thing was lying in bed with a book.
Somehow I’m keeping up the amazing reading record I started last month. I thought reading 7 books in one month was a one off but I’ve actually bested it this month, even though it was shorter! I could say this had something to do with the fact I went on holiday for a week and I normally read a lot on holiday but in actual fact I only read 2 books on holiday which is the least I’ve read on a holiday in over ten years.
So why? I’m not sure. Honestly, I think I’m just getting better and better at finding books I’ll love!
I also took most of the month off of hard writing stuff. I did write a fun short story at the start of the month but other than that I’ve not had anything to do which meant I had a lot more time to read. I’m diving back into the writing stuff now. It’s nerve-racking as hell because I’m starting revisions on #ExcitingSpaceWIP and trying to make something better when you’re not sure what’s ‘better’ is scary!
Other stuff that happened this month was that holiday I mentioned. It was lovely to see the sun again! We did some house hunting, looking at property (and by me I mostly mean my parents but I did see a couple of the best ones) which was SO EXCITING and we found an amazing place BUT we haven’t sold our house yet so now that’s nerve-racking too because we don’t know that place will still be there for us.
Basically everything in my life is nerve-racking now! Is it any wonder I’ve been burying myself in books? haha
So back to the less nerve-racking subject of this month’s books starting with my stats….
Read: 8 (!!) Acquired: 7
I didn’t mean to get so many new books but at least the number of unread books I own didn’t go up! Plus 6 of them were arcs and the other one was free with a bookclub so I couldn’t resist!
I’m back from my holidays, which were lovely and warm (I’m so sad I’m back in the cold), I read some great books but today I’m going to talk about a bunch of my favourite books that are criminally underrated.
Top Ten Tuesdays is a book meme currently hosted by The Artsy Reader Girl. It has a new topic every week which you can find here. This weeks topic is Books I LOVED with fewer than 2000 ratings on goodreads.
Fair warning some of these I did originally get for free in exchange for an honest review (I’ve marked them as arcs) but they’ve remained on my favourites because they were awesome.
I’ve had an excellent start to my reading year this month. I finished a whole 6 books and that’s only because I made myself stop reading towards the end of the month so I wouldn’t have too many reviews to write! Four of them were five star reads although towards the end of the month things went down hill a little with a DNF.
Away from reading, I’ve been taking the month off from writing and by that I mean I draft zero’d a 10k short story, started writing myself an edit letter for #ExcitingSpaceWIP and did more planning and plot hole hunting for my next wip…..whoops. (i’m officially naming the new one #ChronicallyWitchyWIP). Anyway, it actually was a lot of time off even if it doesn’t sound like it hence all the reading.
Our house is also
officially on the market, so we’ve had lots of people coming and going for
viewings. All the waiting is very nerve-racking.
But back to books. I think one of the reasons I had such a good reading month is that I read whatever I felt like at that moment which meant I bought quite a few books but I did read most of them as soon as I bought them which meant I kept my owned books under 50 which is my aim.
Books Read: 6 DNF: 1 Books Acquired: 7
I have a quick teaser update for the yarn I showed you last week. The blanket is going well and it is ridiculously soft and cuddly. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever made anything this snugly. It’s going to be one big square (think granny square but using a different stitch). It looks like two here but I’ve just folded it over so you can see the reverse is identical. I love reversible stitches!
I’ve finished a full ball of the cappuccino and have just done my first row of the second colour. The red which looks very bright! I’m loving it. Although each row around the square is getting longer to do so progress will be slowing down.
In other news, a lot has been happening here over the last week. My brother and his girlfriend left yesterday for their two year round the world trip! See you in two years, bro! And my nan, (and my cat) moved out into her own assisted living apartment that’s been all done up and snazzy. Which means, a) the house is now much quieter with half the occupants. And, b) the whole family (without the cat) went out for a goodbye meal.
There was thirteen of us… I think? I can’t count that high, okay? We went out to a lovely Chinese restaurant and had yummy food. I’m resting up now. It was the first time I left the house since the move one month ago. In fact. It’s the first time I made it down the stairs in that time. So lots of resting up in order.
In the meantime I’ve been writing more of my Exciting Space WIP. I’m over a third way through which is ….. exciting! I’ll be finished writing it in November, which simultaneously feels like its going quickly and is an absolute age away!

This is the final post in my planned book series lists. I’ve done book series I loved but DNF’d, book series I’ve started and will keep reading, book series where I’m waiting for the next book to be released, and book series where I’ve bought the first book but not read it yet (there were a lot of those!). But time for books I wasn’t to read in the future.
That means series where I haven’t read or bought any books in the series and at least the first book has already been published (and the second book has at least been announced). That might seem like a lot of rules but I still have plenty of series to add to this list!
Looking back through my goodreads want-to-read shelf to compile this list has made me remember some amazing books I added ages ago but now really want to read all over again (thanks past me). So this list got a bit longer than planned! I haven’t added every series that I have interest in reading just the ones I really want to read the most otherwise we’d be here till Christmas.
I managed to shortlist 11.
It’s June which means it’s summer, the world cup and most importantly it was my birthday this month. I got older (unfortunately I haven’t found a way of having birthdays without that side effect). And after my mini book haul from my birthday money I am officially stating that I am on a book buying ban until Christmas. Yes, that long. I don’t know if I’ll last but I’m going to try because I have more than enough books to read until then (plus any arcs I get in the meantime). Seriously, I have over double the amount of books I could feasibly read in that time so no more until Christmas…. If you see me buying anything I give you permission to shout at me.
But back to this month, I was hoping to get through quite a few books in June as I’m finally taking a couple of months off editing but, in true me fashion, I got obsessed with a new story idea instead which meant I didn’t get through as many as I’d like. But four is still a decent number and considering one of them was 780 pages I feel like I should be allowed to count that as two books. It was my favourite book of the month though, and all year too.
